Introduction to a Coder

My name is Matt, and I am a senior student at the university of Oklahoma. I am majoring in Computer Science and double minoring in both Math and Business. I came into college as engineering undecided because I hadn't taken enough classes for me to figure out what I actually wanted to do. I had done a simple coding class in high school that came to me very easy so I decided to give it another try and absolutely loved it. It came to me very easy and knew that this is what I wanted my major to be!

Just this past summer I was lucky enough to land an IT internship with the company PepsiCo. I was also lucky enough to be able to work through this internship completely virtual. It was originally supposed to be 12 weeks long but, given the current COVID virus, the duration was shortened to only 6 weeks. I am extremely grateful that PepsiCo was able to continue this opportunity because I had a couple friends who's internships were completely cancelled. In doing this internship, I received a full time offer once I get out of college that I accepted.

Outside of school and work, I have a great group of friend that I love to hang out with. Wether thats us doing activities outside getting active or sitting inside playing a of Catan, we always have a great time together. When I go to my home back in Plano Texas, I have two dogs that greet me with the biggest hellos. I have an 12 year old Border Collie named Shadow and a 10 year old toy Australian Shepard named Sunny. Shadow is "my dog" as my parents love to say because he loves to hang out with the boys whenever I have friends over. He will always be where we are and if someone ever hits me, he defends me and will bark at them until they stop which I think is so cute.

My Two Dogs

If I had an extra day for fun I would get a group together and we would take a trip down to Turner Falls for the day. I've been there a couple times and it never ceases to amaze. There is a ton of hiking trails in the back parts as well as river you can walk through to find cool views. There are a couple cabins out there that I think you can rent but I have never tried to do it, but it might be something I should look into.

  1. Hi Matt!

Two sentences in and I was already speechless. I have felt swamped with schoolwork every day for the last four years, and I only have one major and no minors. I would love to know your secret in how you have handled juggling all of that work. Speaking of, congratulations on your internship with PepsiCo! I hope you had fun working with fun, because it sounds like it was a great experience. I was one of those unlucky people you mentioned whose internship got postponed then cancelled because of the pandemic, so I am happy for you that you still had that experience.
Your dogs are. So. CUTE! Seeing their pictures brought a smile onto my face. And I can relate to the whole "shadow" thing. My dog is the same way, and I love it.

  2. Hey Matt! Congratulations on your internship at PepsiCo and on your future job! That’s so wonderful and impressive! It’s pleasant to see that you love what you are doing. Your dogs are so cute!! Turner Falls seems so fun and beautiful?! I googled it, and there is a castle too, WOW! I’ll definitely try to go before the end of the semester.

  3. Hi Matt. I am a junior majoring in computer engineering and minoring in computer science, and I too enjoy coding. My favorite part about coding is how there really are a lot of different problems you can work on, so the opportunities are endless. I think it is really cool you have an internship at PepsiCo as I have a friend who just started working for Pepsi in Arizona.

  4. Hey Matt, I'm an MIS major and just got introduced to programming this year and it is very difficult so far so I salute you for being able to do computer science. Maybe I should find one of those free apps to help a beginner like me. Being from Oklahoma I have been to Turner Falls too and it's a really pretty area.

  5. Hey Matt! Congrats on your internship! You must have put in a lot of time and effort to score that nice gig. I love your dogs and am also looking at getting dogs in the near future! After seeing yours I might just have to get a couple of the same. I also play a ton of Catan with my friends almost every day and it gets pretty intense. Turner Falls is so much fun and I hope I am able to go back soon.

  6. Hi Matt! It’s nice to meet you! It sounds like you’ve got a lot going on with your major and minors, but I’m glad that you’ve found things you’re passionate about. Congrats on lining up a job! I also love playing Catan! I don’t get to do it very often because Covid keeps my friends and I apart, but it’s such a fun game. I haven’t been to Turner Falls, but I think I definitely need to go! It’s gorgeous. I love hiking and kayaking, so it looks like my kind of place. I hope you find some time to get outside and enjoy nature this semester!

  7. Hey Matt! Congratulations on your PepsiCo internship and your awaiting full-time position! That’s absolutely amazing. Coding is really fascinating, and I feel like it’ll definitely be a major aspect of future technological progression. It’s such a versatile field, and the potential feels limitless. I also love your dogs! Both Sunny and Shadow are adorable. As for Turner Falls, I’ve also heard about the cabins, and I’ve heard a lot of positive reviews.

  8. Hi Matt, congratulations on your internship and full-time position! I also have a few friends who lost internships and that is very fortunate that is worked out. I don't understand much of anything surrounding computer science but I know it is a solid field. I love the dog pic! I love my dogs too and it makes me so excited to see other people's dogs.

  9. Hello Matt!
Congrats on the internship and the full time position. I love the picture of your dogs they look adorable. Let me just say Turner Falls looks AMAZING! I will definitely go and hike if I get the chance. I'm not very knowledgeable on computer science or coding but it sounds fun and I'm happy for you as long as you are and its what you want to do. I wish you the best!

  10. Yay for coding, Matt! I worked for a while in OU IT and I met so many inspiring people that way. And of course every day I am grateful for the software that I cannot do without (as you might have guessed, I am an RSS-person, and I love Inoreader's amazing RSS magic for managing the class blog network; yes, RSS is an old technology, but I still think it is amazing!).
And your dogs are such cuties; I always thought if I were to get a dog I'd like to have an Australian Shepherd or an Australian Cattle Dog; they just seem like such good, smart, lovable dogs.
About Pepsi: this has nothing to do with coding, but it's about Pepsi in India. My favorite Indian musical group is Maati Baani, and they made a commercial for Pepsi in India that I think is super-cool. You can see it here: Crash The Pepsi IPL Commercial. I know the goal of the commercial is to make me want a Pepsi, and it doesn't quite do that, but it definitely makes me want to get up and dance. :-)

  11. Hey Matt!

I am a senior at OU majoring in psychology and minoring in sociology. It was very hard for me to find out what I wanted to major in. I changed my major at least five times. I have never been to Turner Falls but from the picture you provided, it looks absolutely beautiful. I will definitely take my family there because we are all nature people.

  12. Hey Matt! I also started out as an engineering major (chemical) and wound up adjusting to accommodate my interests and skills along the way. It's great that coding comes naturally to you, it's a super valuable skill to have, and congratulations on the internship and job offer from PepsiCo. Turner Falls is a great place to explore, and my friends and I also play Catan all the time - excellent choices on both counts. Your dogs are both adorable, too.

  13. Hi Matt, congrats on your IT internship with PepsiCo! That seems like an amazing gig to land, and you'll get a lot of good experience out of it. Majoring in Computer Science while double minoring in Math and Business does not seem easy at all, congratulations on being able to handle all of that. I've been to Turner Falls once before, it was a nice view!

  14. Hey Matt!

That is super cool that you are pursuing a double minor for your career path. That must take a lot of discipline to dedicate all of your time to school. I hope that your internship will go well and the career path that you chose will fit you perfect. I love the outdoor stuff like Turner Falls and have not had the chance to visit. Perhaps, I will try to come out there one day. Also great picture there that you took.

Congrats on being a senior and getting ready to graduate. That must be exciting but difficult with the times that we are going through right now! I hope that you were still able to make this last year somewhat enjoyable. Also congrats on the internship that sounds super cool and fun! I hope you have a great rest of your semester. and stay healthy!

  16. Hi Matt!
Congratulations on such academic accomplishment! I am very happy for you that your internship was so fruitful and that you were able to complete it!
I love hiking and exploring outdoors, yet I have never been to Turner Falls. I graduate in a month, so that will have to be an immediate bucketlist thing to do before graduation! Thank you for sharing that!

  17. Hi Matt! Way to go on your internship that is amazing! Also I love to hear when people have great friends they are able to do anything with, it makes me so happy! Your dogs are so so precious, I love dogs and how they are so loyal and protective over their owners. I have always wanted a Border Collie because they are so loving and intelligent! I want to give those little puppers a snug!

  18. Hi Matt,

I think it is awesome that you were able to land an internship especially during this stressful time. I was actually trying to get an internship as well but due to COVID they had to cancel everything. I have never been to Turner Falls, but the photo you took likes like it is a great place to enjoy during the day with friends. I find it funny that you live in Plano, Texas. I live in Frisco, Texas which is only like a 5 minute drive. Good luck with everything!!!

  19. Hello Matt! You have a fascinating major and minors. Also congrats on the internship! That is totally awesome! I would also like to mention that you have adorable dogs. Lastly, believe it or not have never been to Turner Falls. I drive and fly past it all the time but have never been haha. Maybe one of these days. Good luck on your upcoming finals!
