Week 6 Reading Part A

Notes for the reading part A

Shantanu is the king who rules from the city, Hastinapura.

Shantanu finds a women down by a river and marrys her under one condition, that he doesn't question what he does.

His wife drowns 7 of their newborn babies to punish the Vasus for stealing Vashishtha's cow.

She takes their 8th baby into the river and returns him grown up named Devavrata, but known as Bhishma.

Shantanu then falls in love again with a fisherman's daughter, her name Satyavati. His father objects because his son Bhishma has been named the successor.

Bhishma renounces his claim to help his father. Shantanu then has 2 sons with Satyavati, Chitrangada and Vichitravirya. Chitrangada becomes king but dies and Bhishma rules as regent for Vichitravirya.

Bhishma seizes 3 daughters in a neighboring kingdom for Vichtravirya, although one of them is sworn to king of Shalwa. She gets sent away and rejected from Shalwa as she has been in another mans house. Amba wants revenge. The other 2 marry Vichtravirya.

Vichtravirya dies with no sons to take over. Satyavati begs Bhishma to break his celibacy to produce sons with the widows Ambika and Ambalika. He refuses and Satyavati calls in her other son preceeding her marriage.

Ambika is repelled by the son, Vyasa, so their son Dhritarashtra is blind. Ambalika turns pale from being scared so the son Pandu is very pale. Ambalika has her maid sleep with him and she likes Vyasa so the child, Vidura, is born flawless.

Dhritarashtra marries Gandhari. Pandu has two wives, Kunit and Madri. Pandu was cursed when he shot a deer while mating so he can't mate.

Kunti has a mantra for obtaining suns from the gods. Pandu asks Kunti to summon Yama and have a child. This happens and Kunti and Yama have Yudhishthira. Next she has a son with Vayu named Bhimasena or Bhima who's really strong. Again with Indra, son named Arjuna who's an expert at weapons.

Madri uses the mantra to summon the Ashwins, twin brothers who create twin sons, Sahadeva and Nakula.

These 5 sons are called the Pandavas.

Pandu dies while making love to Madri, Madri climbs into the funeral pyre leaving Kunti to raise the 5.

The go to Hastinapura, where Pandu's brother Dhritarashtra lives. Dhritarashtra had designated Yudhishthira as his heir but is disturbed about the popularity of the Pandavas. So he creates a house made of oil, resin and straw to catch on fire easy. Vidura warned the Pandavas  about this plan so they escape through an underground tunnel when everyone thinks they died
